Letter to the Editor: Dismantling Democracy

On Saturdays, April 5 and April 19, millions of patriots protested the current administration’s and congressional majority’s dismantling of our democracy.

It was a clear and powerful message: “We the People” are fed up with the lawlessness of our government. While I cannot begin to list all the federal and constitutional laws the administration has been accused of breaking within this 400-word limit, I know there are far too many.

Our country cannot survive long as a democracy without the rule of law. Without it, we will gradually slip into lawlessness and dictatorship. Without the Constitution, our individual freedoms — freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to assembly, freedom of the press, and right of a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury — will be at risk.

The systems we rely on — affordable healthcare, a strong economy, good roads and bridges, advanced communication networks, national defense and countless other institutions that support our quality of life — would fall under the control of a small, cruel ruling class. The people would lose their representative government, and once lost, it would be extremely difficult to reclaim.

That is why millions of patriots took to the streets in more than 1,200 cities and communities across this great country, declaring, “Not On Our Watch.”

That is why friends around the world stood in solidarity with our patriots, sending a clear message: “We Stand With You to save your democracy.”

The fight is not over. There is still much work to be done. But we will prevail — because there are more of us than there are of the dictator and his minions.
