Noah Stephens-Brown

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Noah Stephens- Brown on May 6, 2022. This was unexpected and our family is devastated by the loss of our beloved son and brother. After overcoming brain cancer 4½ years ago, Noah died from bacterial meningitis brought on by complications from that brain surgery.

Noah was born in November 1996 in Port Huron, Michigan to Peter and Lori Stephens-Brown, joining his big sister Lara to complete our family. Noah showed an affinity for music almost from the beginning, conducting the entire Stars and Stripes Forever sitting in his car seat at 8 months old. Maybe his shared birthday with John Philip Sousa and Adolph Sax foreshadowed his amazing musical talent.

After graduating from Marquette Senior High School in 2014, Noah attended the University of Minnesota Duluth where in 2019 he received two bachelor’s degrees in Music Theory & Composition and in Music Education. Noah was an exceptional saxophonist, and could also master any instrument he picked up. In addition to his accomplishments with musical instruments, he was a talented singer and actor -- singing in choirs and musicals, and playing the lead in both The Crucible and Harvey in high school. Noah received many awards through the years for his hard work and talents.

Noah worked 2½ years for Northland Adult Foster Care in Duluth, which revealed his compassion and caring for adults with disabilities. Noah enjoyed board games with friends and family, along with Escape Rooms, which he traveled the country to participate in. He was an amazing cook who enjoyed making challenging, delicious dishes for those he loved. Noah was witty, fun, and quick to laugh, bringing great joy to those around him. Composing music was his passion and life mission. Noah leaves us with a treasure trove of his compositions. In addition to his music life, Noah had a passion for social justice.

Noah was a strong-willed young man who held firmly onto his opinions and beliefs. He was the moral compass for many of us -- not letting us take the easy road on issues. Noah was laid back, kind, gentle, and always there for his friends and family. Below that quiet surface though was a fiery passion for supporting human rights, justice, and fairness in the world. Noah was in his 3rd year of teaching band to middle school children in Montgomery and Le Center, Minnesota. He also taught many private music lessons. Noah loved teaching middle school and cared deeply for his students. In turn, he was beloved by them for his caring, his smile, his sense of humor, for “seeing” each of them, and for never yelling at them.

Noah is survived by his parents Lori and Peter Stephens-Brown; his favorite sister, Lara Stephens-Brown (Anthony Abramson); grandfather Tom Brown II; aunts Debby Freiman (Rick), Kathy Hendry (Kevin), Sue Stephens (Austin Cliffe), Jill Omand, and Mary Lenardson; uncles Chris Stephens (Karen), Larry Stephens (Barb), Steve Brown (Melody); cousins Marce Brown (Jason), Jason Staples, Collette Williamson (Trevor), April Wagner (Matt), Tom Chan (Kira), Jacqui Stephens, Luther Snow (Cassie), and Julie Brannan (Barry); his beloved dog Maisie; and many true friends. Noah was preceded in death by his grandparents Francis and Betty Stephens, grandmother Patricia Brown; and uncle Greg Stephens.

A concert and gathering will be held at a later date where Noah’s life and musical compositions can be celebrated.
