Webster wins first State game, Union Hill and Montgomery lose

The Webster Sox, playing in their first-ever Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament, picked up a 10-3 win over Milroy in the opening round of State Saturday, August 20.

They will return to action Sunday, August 28 at Dundas at 1:30 p.m. and will play Monticello. St. Patrick will play Urbank Friday, Aug 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Faribault. Urbank defeated Sartell, 4-2, in the opening round.

Union Hill and Montgomery each dropped their opening game last weekend. The Bulldogs were defeated 6-2 by Waconia Sunday and Montgomery was edged by Elrosa, 3-1, Saturday.

The following game recaps were provided by the Minnesota Baseball Association.

Webster 10, Milroy 3 Webster broke open a close game in the seventh, scoring five runs followed by four more in the eighth to defeat Milroy on Saturday night 10- 3. The first six innings were dominated by starting pitchers Collin Lovell (draftee from Windom Pirates) and Webster ace Peter Tveite. Both teams could only manage to scratch out a single run with Milroy taking a 1-0 lead on Ben Heichel's RBI double and Webster knotting the game at one in the fifth with a Jake Ekness RBI double to deep left center. In the seventh, Webster batted nine and scored five runs. After two consecutive singles, Ekness singled to left to drive in a run. Two batters later Peter Grassl drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Tveite helped his own cause with an RBI single followed by a two run Brooks Prochaska double. In the eighth, the Sox added four more runs. Will Arendt doubled to lead off the inning. A shortstop fielding error scored Arendt. Two batters later with runners on second and third, Peter Grassl’s second sacrifice fly in as many innings scored a run. Adam Schmitz and Prochaska both drove in runs with singles and Webster was cruising 10-2. Milroy got a run back on a double by Heichel, his second RBI double of the night, in the eighth but left two runners. Tveite went eight innings giving up three runs on six hits, striking out 10 Irish batters and threw 128 pitches. Jordan Huwe pitched a scoreless ninth. Brooks Prochaska went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in for the Sox and Ekness went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Lovell went 6 2/3 innings for Milroy, wearing down in the seventh and allowing six runs on eight hits in taking the loss. Heichel went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in for the Irish. Webster advances and will play Monticello on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Dundas.

Waconia 6, Union Hill 2   Behind the complete-game pitching of Kodey Simon, the Waconia Lakers blew open a close game with a 6-2 victory over Union Hill Sunday afternoon at Bell Field in Faribault. Simon struck out 11 and walked none in throwing a six-hitter. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Lakers erupted for three runs to take a 4-1 lead.  Chris Bullis started the rally by singling to center. He went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. Justin Schultz then drove in Bulls with a single. Derek Martin then beat out an infield single. Max Kalenberg walked to load the bases. An error then scored Schultz and Martin. Waconia kept the rally going in the eighth inning with two more runs for a 6-1 lead. Robbie Smith beat out an infield hit. Ronnie Olson walked, and Bullis singled to load the bases. Smith scored on a wild pitch. Owen Amrhein walked to pack the bags again. Justin Schultz drove in Olson with a sacrifice fly to center. Martin and Bullis led in hitting, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Joe Becker paced the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for4 with an RBI. Conrad Masberg started at pitcher for Union Hill. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, no walks and one strikeout. Jayce Luna, a draftee from the New Prague Orioles, pitched the next 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on three hits, three walks and one strikeout. Charlie Otteson pitched the last 2/3 of an inning without allowing a run, hit or walk. Waconia's next game is against the Fergus Falls Hurricanes at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Dundas.

Elrosa 3, Montgomery 1   Left-hander Payton VanBeck pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter to lead the Elrosa Saints to a 3-1 victory over the Montgomery Mallards Saturday afternoon at Bell Field in Faribault. Elrosa is 18-2 this season. The Mallards end their year with a 18-9 record.   VanBeck allowed one earned run while walking two and striking out six to send the Saints into the second round at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at Dundas.   Montgomery starting pitcher Johnny Krocak also threw a good game. He lasted seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Alex Watermann, a draftee from the Prior Lake Mudcats, pitched the last two innings without allowing a run, hit or walk while striking out four. Five different players had a hit for Elrosa. Kevin Kuefler went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ashton Dingmann batted 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Peyton Winter went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jackson Peter finished 1-for3 with an RBI. Blaine Fischer went 1-for-4. Dawson Pint led Montgomery at the plate, going 2-for-4. Four others got a hit each: Cole Pint 1-for-4 with a run; Ryan Iverson 1-for-4; Johnny Krocak 1-for-4; Tom Flicek 1-for-4 with an RBI; and Aaron Dwyer 1-for-3. The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Winter singled in Dingmann who doubled. Elrosa upped its lead to 2-0 with a run in the fifth inning and 3-0 with a run in the eighth inning. In the fifth, Kuefler singled to left, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-base error in center. In the eighth, Peter singled to left, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball. The Mallards' lone run crossed the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cole Pint beat out an infield hit and scored on a single to center by Tom Flicek.
