Amy Schmitz, 58

Amy Schmitz, age 58, was welcomed to her Heavenly home while peacefully surrounded by her family on December 24, 2021. It was her Christmas miracle after a difficult and courageous battle with corticobasal degeneration.

Born to Eugene and Sally (Bruzek) Schmid, of New Prague, MN, on February 12, 1963, Amy was the oldest of five children who were tightly knit and enjoyed many adventures together growing up. Amy attended New Prague High School and went on to college at Mankato State University. She later completed college in 2003, receiving her Bachelor’s of Science degree with licensures in elementary education and K-12 development disabilities to fulfill her dream of becoming a special education teacher. Amy worked in Jordan through Minnesota River Valley Special Education Cooperative (MRVSEC) before being hired by the District and moving to Jordan Elementary School (JES). She truly enjoyed the 12 years she spent at JES. Amy lived for her students; she formed special bonds with and fought fiercely for each one, constantly going above and beyond to carefully consider each student’s unique situation and abilities. Her awful disease forced her to retire against her will in 2020.

In 1994, Amy married the love of her life, Roger Schmitz, also of New Prague. Roger was her rock and became her loyal and patient caregiver and advocate in her final years. Family time, gardening, crocheting, and reading were some of her hobbies. In her last years, she worked so hard on meticulous book folding projects and loved giving them to people as meaningful gifts. Trips “up north” to Woman Lake were a favorite family tradition.

Amy is survived by her doting husband; children Whitney (Aaron) Simon, Ryan (Sheena), and Katie; 6 grandchildren whom she was the loving Nana of: Gaige, Brylee, William, Owen, Krew, and Baby Schmitz coming in June 2022; father Eugene Schmid; siblings Cathy Nelson, Eric (Lisa) Schmid, and Phil Schmid; and nieces and nephews; her best furry friend, Millie.  Amy is preceded in death and welcomed into Heaven by her mother Sally Schmid and beloved brother Jeffrey Schmid, as well as her father- and mother-in-law Ralph and Lucille Schmitz. She also has several past students in heaven who she was so excited to be reunited with. There is no doubt she will be continuing her Earthly work up in Heaven.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Eugene Theisen officiating.  Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to Mass at church from 10 – 11 AM.  Mass will be live-streamed on npcatholic.org.  Lunch will follow at the KC Hall in New Prague.  Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
