Boys top Fire in WCC opener

The New Prague Trojan boys basketball team continued a stretch of tough opponents last week, losing two games, but defeating Holy family Catholic in their Wright County Conference opener Friday, Jan. 18.

New Prague was scheduled to host Waconia on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and will travel to Delano Friday, Jan. 25. New Prague returns home to face non-conference Hastings Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Eagles 80, Trojans 53 New Prague took on No. 6- ranked Eden Prairie and for the fist 18 minutes, things were even as the teams were tied 30-30 at the half.

"We played a solid first half and competed with a very good basketball team, but the second half got away from us a little bit. Eden Prairie executed their offense very well and shot the ball extremely well," Coach Dan Peterka said.

Hunter Nielsen and Tyler Kemp each scored 21 points for the Trojans, with Nathan Brusseau scoring five, Parker Johnson three, Andrew Nerud two and Sam Novak one. Nielsen had 11 rebounds, two assists and four blocked shots for the Trojans. Brusseau had six rebounds and four assists and Mitchell Callahan had three assists. The Trojans outrebounded the Eagles 34-31, but committed 17 turnovers in the loss.

Trojans 65, Fire 45 New Prague played its fourth straight ranked opponent, in Holy Family Catholic, ranked No. 6 in Class AA. The Trojans had a slow start but led by three at halftime before taking command in the second.

"We came out with great energy in the second half and executed on both ends of the floor," Peterka said. "I was pleased with how we finished the game."
