The Centennial Cabin in Memorial Park had a new wood stove installed on March 27, although new is a relative term as the stove is 139 years old. Dennis Dvorak of the New Prague Area Historical Society explained the stove, made in 1879, is more appropriate for the time period of the cabin.

“It has four burners and two ovens,” he said of the new stove. The old wood stove had one burner and was much smaller. It has been moved to the shed behind the Centennial Cabin. Dvorak noted the new stove is very low, although the majority of people were of shorter height in the 1800s. He added the stove came from a log cabin on a farm near Montgomery.

The historical society raised funds through donations to purchase the new stove, which was $600. “That’s a fraction of what it’s worth,” said Dvorak, adding that this type of stove is hard to find. He explained the historical society found the stove though a tip from Kathy Klehr of the Scott County Historical Society. They were able to buy the stove from a Shakopee resident who restores stoves. While the New Prague Area Historical Society oversees the Centennial Cabin, it is owned by the City of New Prague. Dvorak said city staff helped with the moving and installation of the new stove.
