Council moves forward on Veteran’s Memorial

The New Prague City Council unanimously approved a resolution directing staff to proceed with a proposed Veteran’s Memorial Wall. The wall would be in Memorial Park, east of the New Prague Library.

City Planning Director Ken Ondich explained the area reserved for the memorial would be 60 feet by 60 feet. It is proposed to be built during the Main Street 2020 Reconstruction Project. One thing that was a concern was a storm sewer line that would be near the Memorial Wall.

The city’s engineering firm, Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) Inc., determined it is possible to realign the storm sewer line further to the east and would open up a larger area for the new Memorial Wall. SEH also determined the age and condition of the storm sewer line makes it a good candidate to be replaced with the street reconstruction project.

Ondich said the city’s Park Board reviewed the proposal and asked that room be left for future expansion of the playground.

It was asked if the New Prague American Legion has been contacted about the proposals for the new Veterans Memorial Wall. City Administrator Mike Johnson replied he had talked to Paul Busch, commander of the New Prague American Legion, who was positive about the changes.
