Francis Theodore “Grundy” Grundhoffer, 80

Francis Theodore “Grundy” Grundhoffer, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at his home in Rapid City. 

Grundy was born November 26th, 1937 in New Prague, MN, the youngest of three children to Herbert   and Emma (Polak) Grundhoffer.  He grew-up in Montgomery, MN where he graduated high school. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served proudly for 30 years and was a Vietnam War veteran. After retiring from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sargent, , he worked at Rockwell International (CA) on the B-1 bomber project.  He followed the B1-B to Ellsworth, AFB where he continued to work on the project until the planes were turned over to the Air Force. 

On October 24, 1959 he married Diane Jeanine Moench, daughter of George and Berniece (Dusbabek) Moench of Waterville MN.  Over the years they resided in Rapid City, Grand Forks, ND, Okinawa, and  Germany, ultimately retiring in Rapid City.  During his retirement he served as a past Commander of the Rapid City DAV chapter, volunteered as a veteran advocate, and campaigned for veteran’s rights. He was a member of the DAV, VFW, TREA, American Legion and Emmanuel Episcopal Church. 

He enjoyed attending his daughter’s sporting events, watching Vikings and Twins games, playing cards and visiting family in Minnesota and Pennsylvania.  Grundy and Diane both had a lifelong passion for fishing which they enjoyed together.      

Survivors include his sister, Loretta (Wiskocil) Grundhoffer of New Prague, MN, sons Jeff (Nancy) Grundhoffer of Elizabethtown, PA and Tim (Sue) Grundhoffer of Eagan, MN, his daughter Julie Grundhoffer of Rapid City, his granddaughters Alicia Grundhoffer of Pittsburgh, PA, Nicole Grundhoffer of Philadelphia, PA and Karli Grundhoffer of Eagan, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2005 and brother James Grundhoffer.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00pm on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will take place at 10:00am, Monday, June 11 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Fr. Chris Roussel officiating. 

Inurnment with military honors by the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honors Team will be at 1:30pm at Black Hills National Cemetery.

A memorial will be established to the Rapid City Stroke Support Group.
