Grand slam powers Post 45 in win

The New Prague Post 45 American Legion baseball team resumed action Sunday, July 8, after a week’s break, hosting St. Paul Park in a doubleheader at Union Hill. After falling in the first game, New Prague posted five runs in the first inning, four of them via a grand slam from Drew Picka, and picked up a 19-0 win. New Prague lost Monday, July 9, to Eagan.

The season is winding down for the squad. They were scheduled to face Burnsville Wednesday, July 11, and will play at Northfield on Friday, July 13, a change from what had been scheduled. They play at Apple Valley Tuesday, July 17, and at Inver Grove Heights Wednesday, July 18.

SP Park 5, New Prague 2 St. Paul Park scored twice in the first and three times in the third to take a 5-0 lead and they held on to win 5-2 over Post 45 in the first game of a doubleheader. New Prague got on the board in the bottom of the third when Jesse Cortes reached on a fielder’s choice, moved ahead two bases on a pair of passed balls and scored on a base hit by Simon Kajer. In the fifth, Collin Dorzinski had a leadoff single and scored when Joe Weiers reached on an error. Frank Ruzicka started and took the loss, with Sam Novak pitching in relief.

New Prague 19, SP Park 0 After getting just four hits in the first game, New Prague erupted for 12 hits in game 2 of the doubleheader. That and seven walks gave Post 45 plenty of opportunity to score runs, and that they did. With one out in the first inning, Joe Weiers and Brandon Kincade singled and Bryce Jonson reached on an error. Blake Woodson singled to drive in a run, then Drew Picka cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to right center field. New Prague added four in the second, on only one hit. Two walks, a passed ball on a strikeout and an error helped New Prague, and Simon Solheid had an RBI single. New Prague added three in the third, with Jack Maxa getting a leadoff single, Joe Weiers driving a run with a double and Kincade walking. Two runs scored on a single by Woodson.
