Margaret Rose (Toth) Mantick, 83

Margaret Rose (Toth) Mantick, age 83, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 16, 2018.  “Margie” was born on May 11, 1935 in Wausau, WI and lived in Glandon on the family Farm. She was the youngest of 12 children.  She was the only child of the family born in the hospital as a “change of life baby”.   Her parents, Joseph and Rose (Korka) Toth came to America from Hungary, looking for a better life, and built up a family farm from scratch on 180 acres of land in Glandon, WI that became 1 of 4 outstanding farms in the town of Hewitt.

Marge had a difficult young life, with her mother passing away when she was age 12, and growing up on the farm with her 4 older brothers and father.  She completed school thru 8th grade and then had to discontinue to stay home to help work on the farm, cook, clean and care for her Dad.  She cared for her elderly, ill father who was bed-ridden until he passed away when she was 19.  She then went to work for the Dr. Karl Stahmer family in Wausau, WI as a part of their staff, running their household, cooking for the family, and caring for their children.  She had a strong Lutheran faith and met Oscar Mantick, the love of her life, at church.  They were married August 24, 1957 and had 1 child, daughter Lori Jane in 1960.    After his term in the US Air Force, Oscar went into civil service in air traffic control where the family lived in Indian River, MI, Wausau, WI and finally in 1978 moved to their long-term residence in Alexandria, MN.   They were married just short of 60 years when Oscar passed away in June, 2017.

Marge loved poetry, reading, gardening with vegetables and flowers and had a particular green thumb for African Violets.  She also loved fishing with Oscar, and watching and feeding the birds.  She was particularly proud of her daughter Lori (Medical Practice Administrator) and grandchildren Jeremy (Chiropractor) and Meghan(Registered Nurse) attending college since her education was short.  Marge also received a poetry award for a poem called “Poverty” she has published.

Marge was preceded in death by two siblings who died in infancy in Hungary, four sisters:  Mary (Hank Wicke), Anna (Leonard Mizwinski), Helen (Eddie Jaecks) and Alma (Ernest Sokie) and 5 brothers:  Louis (Selma), Frank (Islah), Joseph (Ethel), William (Margaret) and John (Darlene).

Marge is survived by her daughter, Lori (Brian) Gardow, New Prague, MN, 2 Grandchildren, Dr. Jeremy (Jennifer) Bischoff, Hudson WI and Meghan Heinen, Manhattan, KS and 2 Great Grandchildren, Step-grandaughter Marnie Zea (Jennifer) and Great Grandson Jameson Bischoff (Jeremy).

Services on June 2, 2018 will begin with visitation from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Calvary Lutheran Church, 501 2nd Street SE, Glenwood, MN  56334 and funeral service immediately following.  Pastor Mark Kahrs will officiate the services and private family burial.  Cards and memorials may be sent c/o Anderson Funeral Home, 659 Voyageur Drive, Alexandria, MN  56308.
