Mike Means

Mike was born September 25, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri to John and Nancy Means.  He graduated in 1976 from Yukon High School, Yukon, Oklahoma.

Although he moved around during childhood his heart was fond of his home state: Oklahoma. On June 3, 1978 he married Karen Govett and celebrated 43 years with his best friend in marriage.  They lived a majority of their life in Oklahoma but moved to Virginia in 2003 where he enjoyed diving into the history of the United States.

Mike was known to enjoy watching college sports and was an avid fan of the OU Sooners.  His hobbies throughout the years have included motorcycles, classic cars, wine tastings, loving his numerous pet cats and spending time with family and friends.  His skin will show you a true love of tattoos, an art he spent countless hours dreaming of for his next ink.  Although he appeared hard on the edges he had a heart of gold and cherished his bond with many of their pet cats.  Over the years Mike and Karen have housed several cats, at one time having as many as 9 living with them! Most recently Mike and Karen splurged on their dream cat: Rambo, a pure blood Maine Coon.  Rambo has filled Mike's time with countless cuddles and watching him clumsily navigate his 20 pound body throughout their room.

Mike loved touring wineries and developed a palate for red wines throughout the years.  Being away from family taught him to truly cherish their visits, favoring time at the gun range, wineries near and far, historical sites and long hours at the card table.  Mike and Karen not only celebrated marriage together but also worked at the same company for 34 years.  This meant countless hours carpooling to work together and endless evenings together at home.  He was known to pick at his best friend Karen, but always stated he didn’t need any one else and truly cherished his time with her.

In February of 2021 Mike was diagnosed with cancer. He and Karen then moved to Minnesota where he proceeded with treatment.  After months of chemo Mike’s fight ended on December 23, 2021 where he passed peacefully at Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague.

He is survived by wife Karen Means, brother John Means, niece JoLyn (Zeke) Williams and Andrea (John) Lehman.  He is preceded in death by his parents; John and Nancy, sister Melanie, brother Paul and nephew Dale Means.
