Trojans outgunned in 2AA opener
The New Prague Trojan girls hockey team saw their season end Friday, Feb. 8, with a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Minnetonka Skippers in the Section 2AA quarterfinals.
New Prague, which finished the season with a 14-9- 3 record, came into the game as the No. 7 seed in the section. Minnetonka (12-13-1) was the No. 2 seed.
The Trojans tried to strike quickly, getting a couple of scoring chances in the first few minutes, but Minnetonka asserted itself by sending 12 shots at Trojan freshman goaltender Mariah Marek in the first period. They connected on two of them and led 2-0 after one period, outshooting New Prague 12-3.
Shots were 16-1 in the second period, but the Trojans made that one shot count. Trailing 4-0 and killing off a penalty for too many skaters, Abby Pirkl attempted to ice the puck, sending it into the Skipper zone. The Minnetonka goalie misplayed the puck and it ended up in the net, cutting the lead to 4-1.
New Prague made it a 4-2 game early in the third when Lindsey Bjerke scored on a power play, assisted by Kaitlyn Blair and Marek. New Prague had another scoring chance a short time later that could have....
