Virgil M. “Cutter” Brueggemeier, 68

Virgil M. “Cutter” Brueggemeier, age 68, of New Prague, died unexpectedly after a short battle with cancer, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital Rochester.  Virgil was born on September 28, 1955, in Gaylord, MN, to Martin and Violet (Brockoff) Brueggemeier.  He graduated from Arlington Green Isle High School in 1973 and two years later, married Katherine K. Winter on November 21, 1975, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Green Isle.  That same year, he began working for Nieman Roofing and remained with them for his entire career; it was there that he received his nickname of “Cutter”, and that, too, remained with him his entire life.

Virgil loved life and lived it to the fullest.  Tragedy struck early with the death of his son, Travis, at the tender age of 20.  Virgil honored Travis by climbing into Travis’s race car and racing at the Arlington Raceway.  He enjoyed Harley motorcycling as well.  In his younger years, Virgil enjoyed hunting and fishing.  In more recent years, he could be found in the garden or making soups, famously his chili, and his Christmas chex mix!  His greatest joy came from the time spent with his family, Friday movie nights when the kids were young and always card games.   He loved playing cards, Solitaire if he was alone, but he reveled in the games played with his family, strategically beating them at Phase 10!  His grandchildren had the ability to transform him; when they came, his life reached perfection!  Taken too young, his smile, though rare, and his love of life, will be sorely missed.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Katherine, of New Prague; children, Troy Brueggemeier (fiancé, Hunter Fernelius) of Fridley, Jason Brueggemeier (significant other, Stacey Klein) of Montgomery, Brittany Brueggemeier (fiancé, Corey Leverenz) of Lonsdale; grandchildren, Alayna, Dallan, Cillian; brothers, Merlin (Lynne) Brueggemeier of Arlington, David (Joan) Brueggemeier of Belle Plaine, Duane (Suzy) Brueggemeier of Green Isle; 5 nieces & 2 nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Travis.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lanesburgh with Pastor Henry Koch officiating.  Visitation will take place Tuesday, from 4-7 p.m. at Bruzek Funeral Home and 1 hour prior to the service the next morning at church.  Burial will occur at Friedens Cemetery with lunch following in the church fellowship hall.
