Volleyball opens with 2 impressive wins

It took a while to get going, but the New Prague Trojan volleyball team got on track in the second set and scored an impressive win in its season opener Thursday, Aug. 23, with a four-set win over the defending State Class A Champions Mayer Lutheran. The Trojans followed with a sweep of Faribault the next evening.

New Prague was scheduled to host Northfield Tuesday, Aug. 28, and will host Jordan on Thursday, Aug. 30. The team travels to Shakopee on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Trojans 3, Crusaders 1 New Prague turned the tables on Mayer Lutheran after dropping the first set 25-21. They dominated in the second set 25-13, then won the final two sets 26-24, 25-17. “It was an exciting first match,” said Coach Angie Andersen of her squad. “We started off a little tight but settled in and just kept playing better as the match endured. The team did an excellent job serving and our serve receive and blocking game just got better over the course of the night.” Chloe Davis set the tone for the Trojans with 24 assists, along with an ace serve and two kills of her own. Junior Sophia Andersen led the team with 19 kills, eight digs an ace and two blocks. Danie Friedges had two aces, five kills and four digs, while Kate Seymour had four kills, seven digs, three blocks, an ace and 17 serve receives. Tori Moe added eight kills, an ace and a block, and McKenna Vacek had a team-high 40 serve receives and 12 digs. Amanda Giesen added two blocks.
