Bucs open playoffs with easy win

The 8th rated Lake Crystal- Wellcome Memorial volleyball team provided an early challenge to the No. 1 rated WEM Buccaneers Thursday, Oct. 25 in Waterville in the South Sub- Section quarterfinals.

But in the end, the better team had little trouble advancing.

WEM opened the Sub-Section Playoffs with a 25-13, 25-8, and 25-10 win over the Knights.

LCWM was competitive in the early portions of the three sets, but were unable to compete with the 29-2 Buccaneers, the No. 2 rated team in Class A.

The Bucs led 15-11 in the first set and scored 10 of the final 13 points, including a Morgan Nusbaum ace serve and Trista Hering kill to end the set.

WEM led 16-8 in the second set when Shelbey Hermel stepped to the service line and scored the final nine points. Alexis Morsching and MaeLea Harmon provided kills on the final two points.

After a slow start in the third set, the Bucs held a 7-6 lead.

Three straight service points by Harmon gave the Bucs a four point lead. Iszabela Kalis ended the set by serving the final six points, including an ace serve.

Hermel scored 15 service points and Donahue added 11. Donahue had three ace serves. Toryn Richards and Morsching each had two.

Donahue led a very balanced hitting attack with 13 kills. Richards had....
