Dolls rescued for orphans

Hundreds of rescued dolls will soon be shipped from Minnesota to Haiti to fill the arms of orphans at Christmastime.

The special “dolly project” came to life after Darlene Carlson of rural Janesville, a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, overheard that some children at the Haitian orphanage her church supports through Sacred Heart Mission didn’t receive a gift for Christmas.

“I was talking with our contact there and I found out that one year at Christmastime, they ran out of gifts, and some children only got a holy card. And, I thought, oh, wow... We have all kinds of stuff here. There are lots of dolls with lots of life and love left in them that are discarded or no longer wanted,” explained Carlson.

So, she did what any big sister would do. She called her little sister, Vicki Gregor of Waterville, and enlisted her help in rounding up and refurbishing baby dolls.

“We both have always loved dolls, so it was a good project for us,” Carlson laughed. “Of course, I had three boys, so I had to get my dolly fix with Vicki, who is 20 years younger than me... And, we still love dolls!”

Over the course of the past two years, the sisters collected and shipped approximately....
