Lewiston-Altura scores four touchdowns after halftime Cards use strong second half to defeat Bucs, 27-20
A strong second half by Lewiston-Altura proved to be too much for the WEM football team Friday, Aug. 30 in their season opener.
The Cardinals scored four second half touchdowns and limited the Bucs to one in picking up a 27-20 non-district victory in Waterville.
Cardinal senior running back Cole Mundt rushed for 129 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of 1, 22, 30, and 45 yards.
WEM senior Nick LeMieux gave the Bucs a lead when he caught a tipped pass and scored from 20 yards out less than two minutes into the second quarter. The extra point failed.
Late in the first half, with 30 seconds remaining, Grant McBroom tossed his second touchdown of the game, hitting Cole Kokoschke down the right sideline. Brant Melchert ran in the twopoint conversion, giving the Bucs a 14-0 halftime lead.
Lewiston-Altura, a team which dressed only 26 players, scored the next three touchdowns, taking a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Mundt scored on a 1-yard run with 5:52 left in the third quarter. He added a 45-yard touchdown run with 3:10 left in the quarter. His third touchdown was on a 30-yard run with 10:09 remaining in the game.
The Bucs tied the game 16 seconds later when McBroom hit Matthew Van Houdt who raced 66-yards into the end zone. The two point conversion failed, leaving the score tied at 20- all.
