Medford edges WEM to force three-way tie

The Gopher Conference girls basketball title will go down to the final game this season.

WEM, Medford, and Blooming Prairie will be fighting for the title.

Medford defeated the Bucs 57-43 Friday, Feb. 7 to force a three-way tie for the top spot in the conference with a 10-2 record.

WEM played Blooming Prairie Tuesday, Feb. 11 and Blooming Prairie and Medford play Friday, Feb. 14. WEM will face USC Friday.

The Bucs defeated the Tigers earlier this season and also defeated Blooming Prairie.

In the game Friday, Medford opened up a 27-19 halftime lead, limiting the Bucs to only four points during the final eight minutes of the game.

WEM held a 9-6 lead earlier behind a seven point run which included baskets by Trista Hering and Ellie Ready and a three-pointer by Brielle Bartelt. Medford scored the next 10 points, building a 16-9 lead.

Back-to-back Toryn Richards’ three-pointers ended that scoring run and trimmed the Medford lead to 16-15.

The Tigers closed out the opening half on an 11 to 3 run.

Three minutes into the second half a Richards’ twopoint basket pulled WEM to within 32-25.
