The first day of the Class A State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University provided some mixed results for the 10 WEM athletes competing. Junior MaeLea Harmon advanced into Saturday's 100-meter final with the second best preliminary time of 11.99, her best time ever. The 4 x 100-meter relay team (Harmon, Alexia Morsching, Shelby Hermel, and Toryn Richards) also advanced to Saturday's final with  the third best time of 50.22.

The 54th annual Waterville Bullhead Days celebration starts Friday, June 8 and runs through Sunday, June 10. Friday events include the Medallion Hunt, a Karaoke Contest, the 62nd annual Miss Waterville Pageant, and a Fireworks Display. Saturday there will be a Softball Tourney, Kids Fishing Contest, NAPA Remote Control Car Demolition Derby, Bean Bag Tourney, and Pedal Tractor Pull, and a Karaoke Contest. Sunday is the Grand Street Parade, Waterville Lions Kids Bingo, and Raffle Drawing. Check out the June 7 edition of the LIFE/Enterprise for more on the festivities.

Taxpayers will be picking up the bill for the clean up of approximately 20 tons of construction waste that was dumped in a Waterville Township ditch on Tuesday, June 5 or Wednesday, June 6.
According to Waterville Township Chairman Alan Gehrke, the mess was discovered along 470th Street on Wednesday morning and was then reported to the township and Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office. The ditch is located north of Waterville and west of Highway 13.

I must thank you for all of the birthday and Mother’s Day cards I received. The refrigerator doors and walls are full of cards of best wishes. AND I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtfulness. I’d like to write all of the messages I received but the Lake Region Life newspapers would be too heavy to mail! One which really expressed my feelings had the message “As time goes by, we begin to learn what matters. Years don’t matter, distance doesn’t matter, FAMILY and Friends matter.

A fantastic run through the Section 2AA baseball tourney came to an end Tuesday, June 5 when Belle Plaine defeated WEM, 7-2, to end the Buccaneer season. WEM won four of six games in the Section tourney, including a 2-1 win over No. 1 seed St. Peter Tuesday night. WEM finished 3rd in the Section and finished with a 14-6 overall record. The lawsuit against the Le Sueur County Historical Society took a small step Monday when a judge approved binding arbitration to determine an official membership list.
 
Mark Vandelist, District Court Judge of Minnesota's First Judicial District, gave both sides of the lawsuit 90 days to enlist in the help of an arbitrator who will simply resolve the question of who are members of the historical society, a nonprofit organization.
 

Four young ladies will vie for the title of Miss Waterville 2018 during the 62nd Miss Waterville Pageant, which will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School auditorium.
The contestants include: Morgan Nusbaum, Hannah Petry, Alyssa Schwartz, and Kayleen Stangler.

She has organized the Miss Waterville pageant for almost four decades, and this year, Linda (Meskan) Pommeranz has been named the 2018 Bullhead Days grand marshal in recognition of her dedication to the community.
"It's truly an honor," Pommeranz stated. "I love this community and I've enjoyed putting on the pageant, but this will be my last one--number 40. It's time for me to spend more time with my grandchildren."

The WEM baseball team is one of four teams remaining in the Section 2AA baseball tourney after winning two games last week. The Bucs shut out Blue Earth Area 3-0 Friday, June 1 and defeated Blue Earth Area, 7-3, Saturday, June 2. These two wins came against teams who defeated WEM earlier in the season. The Bucs will host No. 1 seed St. Peter at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 5 in Waterville. If they win, they would play Belle Plaine 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game Tuesday. The Section 2AA Championship is scheduled for Thursday, June 7 in Waterville at 5 p.m.

Ten Buccaneer athletes will compete in the 2018 Class A State Track and Field Meet Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9 at Hamline University. All 10 qualified Saturday, June 2 at the Section 2A Meet at Mankato West. The State entrants include seniors Chris Byrne and Taylor Glende, juniors MaeLea Harmon, Alexis Morsching, Shelby Hermel, Tanner Ranslow, Tyler Hermel, and isaac Pratt, sophomore Jaden Taylor, and freshman Toryn Richards. Richards will compete in the pole vault and high jump. Harmon will compete in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

The WEM basbeall team will host Blue Earth Area Friday at 5 p.m June 1. at William J. Grose Field in the Section 2AA loser's bracket quarterfinals. Blue Earth Area was defeated by St. Peter on Thursday. The loser of the game between the Bucs is eliminated. The winner will face Tri City United at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m. St. Peter and Jordan also play Friday in the winner's bracket semifinals. The winner will play at Waterville at 11 a.m. against Belle Plaine. The loser will face Le Sueur-Henderson at 4 p.m. in Waterville.

After failing to resolve issues and determine who is a member, the lawsuit against Le Sueur County Historical Society (LCHS) heads to court on June 4.
 
Kevin Wetherille, one of the attorneys for the 16 plaintiffs who claim to be members and asked a judge on February 21 to require LCHS to grant them access to financial and governance documents, and for a fair election, said they are still running into barriers.
 
One of the barriers is the membership list.
 

The WEM baseball team was defeated 5-0 by Jordan Wednesday, May 30 in the Section 2AA quarterfinals. The Bucs will now play Friday, not Thursday, as it was previously reported. WEM's opponent wil be either No. 1 seed St. Peter or No. 9 seed Blue Earth Area. These two teams have been rained out on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30. They are scheduled to play Thursday, May 31. If St. Peter wins, WEM will host Blue Earth Area Friday in Waterville. If Blue Earth Area wins, WEM would play at St. Peter Friday. Times for the Friday games have not yet been determined.

Memorial Day programs were held at Elysian, Waterville, Morristown, Kilkenny, and St. Jarlath on Monday morning, May 28.

Iszabela Kalis, daughter of Jacob and Leslie Lee, was crowned Miss Morristown 2018 during the Wednesday night, May 30, pageant. Her royal court includes: First princess Alexis Morsching, second princess Heather Thompson, and third princess Ellenor Whitney.
Mackenzie Chavie, daughter of Curtis Chavie, was crowned Little Miss Morristown. Her royal court includes princesses Nora Boese and Payton Gainor.
