The Waterville Indians amateur baseball team will open their Class C State Tournament Sunday, Aug. 19 at Shakopee against Lastrup. Game time is set for noon. The Indians will be playing in the State Tourney for the first time since 2012. They won the 13-60 League this summer and placed second in the Region 6C Tourney, losing 6-3 to Jordan in the championship Sunday, Aug. 12 at Gaylord. Joan Leona Broughten, 85, of Owatonna, died Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna.
Mary Ann Evelyn Wilcox, age 83, passed away in The Woodlands, Texas, on August 3, 2018.
Mary Ann was born August 2, 1935 to Henry and Antonia Novotny in Le Center Township, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Le Center, and graduated from high school in nearby Montgomery.
In 1955, while working in Minneapolis for Cargill Corporation, she met Allan Wilcox, her husband of 63 years. They married July 2, 1955 in Montgomery, then moved shortly after to San Francisco.

Bryant Holder, 32, is in custody in Le Sueur County Jail on charges of domestic assault, terroristic threats and assault in the second degree with a dangerous weapon, all felony charges.
The Waterville Indians deafted the Gaylord Islander 5-2 Friday night, August 10 at William J Grose Park in the Winner's bracket semifinal game of the Region 6C Tournament. The victory send the Indians to the Class C State tournament. They will play Gaylord Sunday, August. 12 at Gaylord for the Region 6C Championship. 19-year-old Luke Sellner pitched a complete game three-hitter, his second win in the Region Tourney. The Class A State Tourney starts August 16-19 in New Prague, Shakopee, and Jordan.
Delmar J. Kramer, age 82 of Waterville died on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the Lake Shore Inn in Waseca.
The WEM Board of Education approved the resignation of board member Rachel Androli during a special meeting Monday, Aug. 6. Androii is currently running for Waseca County attorney and in event she was to win this election, she could not hold two elected positions at one time. Announcing her resignation at this time saves the district the cost of holding a special election for her position at a later date. There are five of the seven spots up for the election on the WEM Board. Androli's spot is a two-year term. There are four, four-year terms also available. Check out the Aug.
The WEM 16U Softball Team tied for 9th in the 16U Northern National Championships held Aug. 2 - 5 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. After dropping their first two games in pool play, the Bucs split four games in the bracket tournament. The two teams they lost two placed in the top five overall. As my friend Tim Kinniry said a couple of weeks ago when I interviewed him for a story, "Cancer, I hate that word!" I can acknowledge his hatred for the disease which can ruin the lives of anyone.
Fortunately, I have now lived through two bouts of this disease, the most recent was over the course of this summer.
I was pretty hesitant as to whether or not I would write about my latest bout with cancer, but I want people to know this can be beat.
In September of 2015 I had a chunk of melanoma cut out of my
inner thigh.

Nancy J. Frederick, age 60, of Lake Crystal died Friday, August 3, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System- Mankato. A Celebration of Life will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Woodland Hills Funeral Home. Nancy was born to Bernard and Phyllis (Pemrick) Hanks in Faribault, MN. She grew up and attended school in Waterville. Nancy married Lee Frederick December 28, 1984 at the Church of St. Canice, Kilkenny, MN. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, giving to thrift stores, card parties, volunteering but especially time spent with family and friends.
Shirley Lee Zimprich, age 82 of Elysian, died on Thursday, August 3, 2018 at the Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato. Born on May 20, 1936 in Morristown, Shirley was the daughter of Donald and Ernestine (Woker) Meschke. After graduating from Morristown High School Shirley was married to Joseph F. Zimprich, Jr.
Approximately two weeks ago, the WEM Board of Education held a special meeting to discuss facility planning based on the school district's survey results. At that time, there were five options presented by Gary Benson of Kraus Anderson. The board, staying within the wishes of the district residents of not going over the $20 million budget which was outlined in the survey, directed Benson to update the concept plans and costs budgets.
The Waterville Indians and Morristown Morries amateur baseball teams will start Region 6C Playoiff action Saturday. The Indians will host Arlington at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. Morristown will play Saturday at 4 p.m. in Jordan against Fairfax. Win or loss, Waterville will host a game Sunday. Morristown will either play at Jordan Sunday or host Lake Crystal.
